How to Make Your Own Kitty Dinners and Treats

Nov 15, 2008 Kelly Whitt

Learn how to cook for your kitty cat: recipes for dinner and treats that your cat will love!

Give your cat a special treat by making his meal from scratch. Try these recipes for a homemade kitty dinner, snack crackers, and even a meal that you both can share! You'll be saving money and be comforted by knowing just what goes into your cat's dinner.

Homemade Cat Food Dinner

  • 2/3 cup ground chicken or hamburger
  • 1 jar of mixed vegetables baby food
  • 1 cat vitamin crushed (optional)
  • 1/3 cup of plain dry bread crumbs

In a small pan over medium heat, add your meat and a little water. Poach the meat until it is medium rare. (Poach means to cook in boiling or simmering water.) Remove the pan from the heat and allow the meat to cool. Next, pour the contents of the pan into a bowl. Add in the vegetables and vitamin if you choose. Mix these ingredients in the bowl and form into marble-sized balls. Roll the balls in the bread crumbs. You may serve it immediately or store it in a sealed container in the refrigerator for three days.

Catnip Crackers

  • 3/4 cup of flour
  • 1/2 cup of whole wheat flour
  • 2 tablespoons of dried catnip
  • 1/2 cup of yogurt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a bowl, mix together the two flours and the catnip. Next, stir in the yogurt, egg, honey, and vegetable oil. Roll out the catnip dough onto a floured surface. Cut the dough into small dime-sized pieces. Find tiny cookie cutters in a specialty store to make the crackers more festive. (This recipe also makes a great gift for a cat lover and his/her cat!) Place the cut dough onto a greased cookie sheet and bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Catnip crackers should be fed as a treat and not as a meal. Store uneaten crackers in a sealed container in the refrigerator for a week or frozen in the freezer for three months.

Fish Dinner for Kitty and You

Many humans already share their meals with their feline companions, so here is a simple recipe to make for dining with your cat. The recipe can also be made into a treat that is stored frozen. The bonus is that the garlic powder helps your cat to repel fleas.

  • Package of frozen breaded fish sticks
  • 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder

Cut the fish sticks into kitty-bite-sized pieces and sprinkle with garlic powder. To serve right away, bake or microwave according to the package directions. To store them for treats later, place in a sealable plastic bag and store in the freezer for up to three months. Then just remove the amount of treats needed and microwave, then cool, the treats to serve.

Give your cat a special treat and save some money by whipping up a batch of your own homemade cat food. Your kitty will thank you.

Kelly Whitt :
Garlic powder is NOT toxic in small doses as described here. Garlic, like anything else eaten in large quantities, can be poisonous. An animal would have to eat most of a bulb before they get ill, not a little bit of powder. To do your own research on the topic, try googling "garlic powder for cats" or simply call your vet to see what he or she says on the matter.

I agree with Kelly on the topic of garlic. It's raw garlic in large amounts that will harm a cat, not a little bit of garlic powder. The first "guest" doesn't sound like an expert on the subject. I'm assuming that Kelly would not have taken the time to write on the subject if she weren't an expert.
