Socialization is an integral part of feline wellness.

Cats are happiest when they are properly socialized and have learned to adjust their instincts to their environment. It's important to help your cat get used to different sights and sounds. Socializing a domestic cat is important and requires time, patience, love and commitment.

Socialization Techniques for Kittens

Socializing a kitten is usually a breeze! Most kittens tend to be gregarious as long as they feel loved and secure.

One way to socialize your kitten is to let him or her tag along with you. This is a good way to expose your kitten to a wide variety of places, people, scents and sounds. Remember that your kitten is a baby so you may want to socialize with your kitten in a pet carrier. Safety should always be your top priority.

Socialization of kittens also requires that you guide them away from things that can harm them. When your kitten goes near dangerous places or acts out negatively you can discourage the behavior by clapping your hands loudly and saying 'no' or purchasing a water gun and spraying a little water at your kitten when he or she is up to no good.

Socializing Your Adult Cat

It's important to start socializing your cat as soon as possible because the mind of a kitten is a tabula rasa. The adult cat has formed a few opinions about the world and may resist your socialization efforts. You're going to need a lot of determination.

Be considerate that your adult cat may find new environments intimidating. Adult cats stress levels soar when they are placed in a foreign surroundings so be sure to start small. Slowly build up your cat's confidence and always remember that it's important not to subject your cat to any kind of stress whatsoever.

Here are some fun, safe socialization techniques for your adult cat:

  • Play Hunting: A great method of socialization for cats of all ages is simple play. Chasing a string or catching a toy triggers your cat's instincts to kick in. Cats are natural hunters so they generally love any game that gives them a chance to stalk and capture prey, even an inanimate object such as a cat toy.
  • Praise Your Cat: Encouragement and praise will help your cat to thrive. Be observant as to which activities your cat enjoys most and reward your cat with treats and affection when it's done a good job.

Once your cat is confident enough, purchase a cat harness and leash. Your cat will not be thrilled but start by taking kitty out for just a minute or two. Make sure you don't venture too far from the cat's territory. Over a period of several weeks, slowly increase the amount of time you spend outside as well as the distance you and your cat travel.

Socializing Older Cats

If your cat is a senior, 8 years or older, taking an him or her out of its territory is rarely a good idea. The stress can have serious consequences for your older cat's health. If you must move your older cat to an unfamiliar environment, it is wise to consult your veterinarian prior to moving your cat.

That said, play hunting and praise can be used to socialize older cats.
